- A laparotomy sponge can be used to pad and protect the liver surface. Subsequently, a curved incision is made along the diaphragm peritoneum, following the costal margin. The incised edge of the diaphragm peritoneum is then elevated and placed on traction by using ring forceps or sequential Allis clamps
